Chowli (Chavli / Chawli) Ma Dhokli / Flat Beans Curry


Chowli Ma Dhokli is another popular dish from lip smacking Gujarati platter. Made with flat beans (chowli), gram flour (besan) and gourd (tori/ turai), gravy, with , gram flour (besan) balls.

Category- Vegetarian

Ingredients

Flat beans (chowli) 250 gms, chopped
Ridge gourd (tori/ turai)100 gms, cut into cubes
Gram flour (besan) 100 gms
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder (haldi) ½ tsp
Oil for frying
Coriander powder (dhania powder) 1 tsp
Red chilli powder (lal mirch powder) 1 tsp
Mustard seeds (rai) ½ tsp
Cumin seeds (jeera) ½ tsp
Coriander leaves (dhania leaves) 1 small bunch
Water for cooking

For Dhokli

Gram flour (besan) 1 cup
Oil 4 tbsp
Sugar ¼ tsp
Coriander leaves (dhania leaves) 1 small bunch
Coriander powder (dhania powder) 2 tsp
Red chilli powder (lal mirch powder) 1 tsp
Asafetida (heeng) 1 pinch
Water

Method

Heat one tsp of oil in pan and add mustard seeds (rai) and cumin seeds (jeera). To this add flat beans (chowli) and ridge gourd (tori/ turai), sauté, now cover the pan for two minutes and cook. Once sauté add the masalas and cook.

Dhokli Preparation-

In bowl mix gram flour (besan) and all the ingredients of dhokli, mix well. Add water and make small marbles sized balls, pat it to make flattened balls and add it to the curry.

Add tow glasses of water and increase the flame. Be gentle while turning the dhokli’s, see that do not break. Cook till the dhokli’s and vegetables are cooked and they are soft. They could be served with pooris or rotis.
